Microsoft File Classification Infrastructure (FCI) is a Windows Server solution that provides built-in file classification capabilities. FCI allows you to automate file classification and apply corporate policy based on the classifications. For example, you can define rules for document expiration, document encryption, and access permissions.
FCI includes a number of built-in classifications. It also has an extensible infrastructure that enables Microsoft partners to supply classification solutions that integrate with FCI. These extensibility points are called plug-ins. The CA DataMinder CCS includes an FCI plug-in.
The CCS FCI plug-in allows to you to categorize documents on your network based on file classifications returned by the CCS. You can specify which policies in the CCS Policy Pack you want to use when classifying documents. In Windows Server 8, you can also use the CCS FCI plug-in to create conditional access rules for individual files. That is, you can grant or deny access to a file, or you can encrypt a file, based on its CCS classification.
You manage FCI through the File Server Resource Manager, which itself is a feature of the File Services role in applicable versions of Windows Server. Using the File Server Resource Manager, you can configure FCI to apply CCS classifications to files.
Note: The official feature name for the CCS FCI plug-in is CA DataMinder Classification for Windows Server. For simplicity, this guide always refers to this feature as the 'CCS FCI-plug-in'.
