When Do Triggers Activate?

Data In Motion triggers activate when they detect print jobs that match the specified trigger criteria:

Applications

Before CA DataMinder applies Data In Motion triggers to a file or document being printed, it first applies an application filter. That is, it checks which application the user is using. If this matches an 'Ignored Application' as defined in the registry, the CPSA allows the print job and no policy triggers are applied. If the application is not listed in the registry, the CPSA does apply Data In Motion triggers to the file or document

For details about setting up the CPSA and defining ignored applications, see the Endpoint Integration Guide; search for 'client print system agent'.

File source must be 'CPSA'

To ensure that CA DataMinder can detect print jobs, you must set the Which File Sources? setting to 'Client Print System Agent' in each Data In Motion trigger.

Printers

Data In Motion triggers can monitor any printer on your network. To define the printers that you want to monitor (or the ones you want to exempt from control), you need to add their device names to the relevant user policies. Specifically, you need to edit the Removable Devices or Printers settings in Data In Motion triggers.

File names

Data In Motion triggers can detect specific files being printed. You can define specific file names and types in the Top Level File Names settings.

File properties or text content

When a file is sent to a printer, Data In Motion triggers can detect specific formats (such as Microsoft Word documents). They can also analyze the file’s text content to detect the presence or absence of key phrases, or to determine whether the file matches a particular document classification.

When used in combination with XML Attribute data lookup commands, you can also set up triggers to detect a file’s attributes such as its size, date created, date last modified, and the file author.
