CCS Fails to Retrieve Content Due to Authentication Error

Problem

The CCS fails to retrieve document content due to an authentication error.

Description

The CCS returns the following error 

"Failed to retrieve content identifier 'http://<server>/<path>/<content>' due to error 'The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.'."

By default, the CCS runs as the NetworkService account. But this account did not have the correct permissions (either the correct credentials or authentication cookies) to access the document content.

Resolution

For integration with SiteMinder, SiteMinder provides the CCS with a single-use credentials token with each classify call which it uses to access the SharePoint document. This error indicates a problem with those credentials and must be resolved in the SiteMinder configuration.
