What Filters Does the CPSA Use?
The CPSA is highly flexible and supports various levels of filtering, allowing you to closely control the use of printers in your organization. To determine whether or not a user is allowed to send a document to a specific printer, the agent applies the following filters:
- Print Screen filter: When a user presses the Print Screen button, the CPSA checks the user policy to determine whether the button is disabled.
Specifically, the CPSA applies the Disable Print Screen? setting in the \System Settings folder. If the button is disabled, the CPSA blocks the print job and optionally displays a notification dialog with an explanatory message.
Note: No print event is generated when the CPSA blocks a Print Screen operation. CA DLP does not save details of these blockings in the CMS database.
- Application filter: Alternatively if a user attempts to print a file or document from an application (for example, by choosing File>Print in Microsoft Word), the CPSA checks which application the user is using. If this is:
- Listed in the IgnoredApplicationList registry setting, the CPSA permits the user to send the document to the printer. Policy is not applied.
- Any other application, the CPSA applies printer and file filters defined within the user policy—see step 3.
- Printer filter: When the CPSA applies user policy, it uses Data in Motion triggers. First, these triggers check whether the printer itself is subject to, or excluded from, policy control.
If the printer is excluded from policy control, the print request is allowed to continue. Otherwise, the triggers apply a file filter.
- File filter: Finally, the Data in Motion triggers examine the file’s properties and analyze its text content. The results of this policy processing determine whether the CPSA blocks or allows the print operation.
