Policies - Performance OLAs
View and manage the list of performance operational level agreements (OLAs) to define the expected levels of operation for a user-defined application across one or more groups of client networks. The management console provides a default OLA to measure application performance across networks that do not have an assigned network type.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which applications should have a performance OLA? As a best practice, CA recommends creating an application performance OLA for user-defined applications that represent the largest (or most constant) amount of traffic to each site to get more observations and statistical significance. You cannot set operational levels for system-defined applications.
- How can I determine whether a performance OLA is enabled for a particular application? The management console calculates performance OLAs for an application by setting OLA thresholds for Network Round Trip Time (NRTT), Server Response Time (SRT), and Total Transaction Time (E2E). Use the NRTT, SRT, and E2E columns to determine the number of performance OLA thresholds for each metric.
- How does the management console calculate OLA compliance? On a OLA metric, the management console evaluates each transaction for OLA compliance, computes the hourly percentage of transactions that are compliant, and stores those hourly percentages. Unlike performance data, where the management console averages performance data into five-minute aggregates ("buckets") which then get averaged into hourly "buckets," OLA hourly percentages are not rolled up.
- Why is the same application listed more than once? If you have added a performance OLA for an application on a particular network type, the application appears in the list more than once. Use the Network Type column to identify the application performance OLA on each network type. The management console applies the application performance OLA for the Default network type to client subnetworks that do not have an assigned network type.
- How do I enable a performance OLA for an application? Click
to edit the OLA thresholds for a user-defined application.
- Why should I add performance OLA thresholds? If you have assigned network types to your networks, the management console can monitor compliance with performance OLAs across each network type using appropriate performance OLA thresholds, and provide more accurate reporting. Unlike performance thresholds which indicate when application performance across a network is Normal, Minor (yellow), or Major (orange), a performance OLA calculates whether the application performance meets the required operational level. Remember, a performance management threshold tells you whether an application is performing normally, and a performance OLA tell you whether the application is performing within acceptable boundaries. In most cases, you do not want to know that an application is performing normally to find that its performance is unacceptable.
