Import VLAN Tags
You can use the Import VLAN Tags feature to automate the process of assigning VLAN tags to domains.
Create a comma separated values (.csv) file using the following format:
<Domain Name>,<Device Management IP Address>,<Device Feed Name>,<VLAN Tag(s)>
Consider the following information when creating a bulk import file:
- Each combination of Domain Name, Device Management IP Address, and Device Feed Name represents an identifier within the file and must be unique.
- Creating multiple entries for the same feed combination in a bulk import file will result in an error.
- The following rules apply to Domain-Management-Feed combinations added with the Import VLAN feature:
- If the combination already exists in CA ADA, it will be overwritten by the new definition in the bulk import file. For example, if the existing combination includes VLAN tags 10 and 11, and the entry in the bulk import file includes VLAN tag 10 only, the result for the combination will be to assign only VLAN tag 10 to the combination.
- If the combination already exists in CA ADA and is included in the bulk import file with no VLAN tags specified, the definition for that combination will be removed from CA ADA. This is the preferred method for bulk removal of definitions from CA ADA.
- The VLAN Tag field can be blank, or contain any combination of the following items:
- a single VLAN tag
- multiple VLAN tags separated by commas
- a range of VLAN tags in the format <lowest-highest>
- Separate each field with a comma. Do not insert spaces before or after commas.
- If you create the .csv file using a text editor, enclose the Domain Name, Device Management IP Address, and Device Feed Name fields in double quotes. It is not necessary to manually enclose fields with double quotes if you are exporting the data from a spreadsheet application. The export function will add double quotes automatically.
- Blank lines are ignored.
- Comment lines are ignored. Begin each comment line with a hash symbol (#).
- The file name must end with the .csv file extension. Attempting to import a file with any other file extension, or no file extension, will result in an error.
- Fields which contain commas or double quotes as a part of the field are allowed. The entire field must be enclosed in double quotes.
- VLAN tag zero (0) can be used to specify the default domain. The default domain is the domain where CA ADA will group unassigned VLAN tags. If no VLAN tag zero is specified in your file, the default domain assigned by CA ADA during installation will be used for unassigned VLAN tags.
Example bulk import file:
# This is a comment line.
# Add VLAN tag 4 to the Miami domain:
"Miami Domain","10.0.0.1","Feed 1",4
# Add VLAN tags 10 and 20 plus the range of VLAN tags from 30 through 40 to the New York domain:
“New York Domain”,”10.0.0.1”,”Feed 1”,10,20,30-40
# Add all unassigned VLAN tags plus VLAN tag 15 to the Chicago domain.
# Since VLAN tag (0) is included, Chicago becomes the default domain.
“Chicago Domain”,”10.0.0.1”,”Feed 3”,0,15
To import the file into CA ADA, follow these steps:
- Open the CA ADA Management Console.
- Ensure that the management console is synchronized with the list of domains created in CA PC or CA NPC. An error will occur if you attempt to import VLAN data into a domain which is unknown to the management console.
- Verify that the domains you wish to use are available in the management console. Click Data Monitoring, Domains on the Administration page to display the list of available domains.
- If necessary, add domains in CA PC or CA NPC, and synchronize CA PC or CA NPC with the management console to update the list of domains available in CA ADA.
- From the management console, select the Administration tab.
- In the Show Me menu, select Data Monitoring, Monitoring Devices, and click the blue gear iconin the ADA Monitoring Device List. Select Import VLANS from the drop down list.
- The Import VLAN Definitions dialog box opens. Click Browse to select the .csv file you created, and click Next to import the list of VLAN definitions into CA ADA.
If CA ADA detects an error in the file, you will receive an error message and none of the items are imported. Correct the error in the file and perform the import again.
Importing data which already exists in CA ADA will overwrite the existing data in CA ADA.
When using a Multi-Port Monitor with CA CEM TIM, do not assign VLAN traffic on the logical port for the TIM to domains. The TIM does not support VLAN-based monitor feeds.
