How to Set Up RDP for Windows Server 2008 Appliances

Once the Windows appliance is running, access the graphic console and set up the network interfaces for internet connectivity. Don't forget to ssh to the appliance first and issue 'net user administrator <new_password>'.

Once the network is set up, navigate to Server Manager and perform the following steps.

  1. click 'Configure Remote Desktop', then select 'Allow connections from computers'
  2. click 'Configure Server Manager Remote Management', then select 'Enable remote management of this server.'
  3. scroll down, click 'Add Roles' to activate the Add Roles Wizard and walk through the next few screens.

select 'Remote Desktop Services' and any other services desired; the wizard will advise what additional dependent services are also needed.

Note: I recommend the selection as noted above. Your laptop may not support Network Level Authentication. If it does not, but you select Network Level Authentication, the RDP connection will fail. You will have to go back, remove the RDP role, restart the appliance, then re-add the RDP Service and configure as noted above.

    Restart is required.

  4. Once Remote Desktop is enabled, activate Remote Desktop on the local machine. Click 'START' and navigate to and select 'Programs/Accessories/Remote Desktop Connection'

enter the ip address of the remote server appliance

click the 'Options' button to enter a User name if desired

click 'Connect' and you will access the remote desktop

Once this is set up and accessible, you can now eschew the graphic console in favor of Remote Desktop: Everything works as if it was your local desktop/laptop. All the physical and control keys work, the screen refresh, keyboard and mouse response are so snappy you forget you are working on a remote virtual appliance.
