How Network Scanning for Servers Works

The CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Open Files scans the network for file servers as follows:

  1. The first time the Agent for Open Files starts up, it displays only your local computer in the File Servers list.
  2. When you subsequently run the Agent for Open Files, it displays all computers found in previous scans. Note that you must expand any collapsed network branches to see these computers.
  3. In the File Servers list, when you expand a collapsed network branch (such as 'Microsoft Windows Network', or a workgroup or domain name), the agent displays any servers already known to exist in that branch. If no servers are known to exist in the branch, the Agent for Open Files automatically performs a scan as soon as you expand it.
  4. If you double-click the name of a server that does not appear to be running the agent, that server is re-scanned to update its status, if necessary.
  5. To force the agent to re-scan all expanded parts of the network hierarchy, click the Scan button.

Note: If the agent encounters more than 200 servers when scanning, it abandons the scan, and reports only those servers in the recently-used list. You are then invited to use the Find button to locate the servers you require.
