Control Statement Specification

The control statement indicates if the volume is under CA 1 control, specifies the volume serial number(s) to be used in the initialization, and describes the current status of the volume in the TMC. The control statements are free-form and may span to as many statements as required but cannot exceed position 71. Comments in the form /*xxxxxxx*/ may appear in the control statements.

Control Statement Definition

verb

Specifies if the volume serial number is under CA 1 control. It must begin in position 1 and must be followed by a space. The values for verb are:

NEWTAPE

Specifies that the volume serial number is under CA 1 control and the physical tape volume is to be replaced. The TMC record for the volume must be in scratch status. The tape's birth date field is updated to reflect the date on which the tape was initialized, and all eight read/write error count fields are set to zero. If the tape is marked bad in FLAG3, this is turned off once the tape is reinitialized. Tapes in inactive (delete) status are not valid for this option.

OLDTAPE

Specifies that the volume serial number is under CA 1 control and the tape volume needs to be reinitialized. The TMC record for the volume must be in scratch status.

When a tape has been successfully initialized using the OLDTAPE verb, the TMC data set name for the volume is updated to reflect that the volume has been initialized, and the volume is available for use as a scratch tape. The four fields containing read/write error counts since the last cleaning is set to zero (read/write error counts since initialization is not cleared). If the tape is marked bad in FLAG3, this is turned off once the tape is reinitialized.

OUTTAPE

Specifies that the volume serial number to be initialized is not a CA 1 controlled tape volume (no Volume record in the TMC with a matching VOLSER). When the OUTTAPE verb is used to initialize a tape volume, an Audit record is written to reflect the volume initialized.

Note: Only one tape is initialized for this verb regardless of NUMBTAPE (see description on following page).

INTAPE

Specifies that the volume serial number to be initialized is under CA 1 control and the TMC record for the volume is in inactive, (DELETE) status, and in scratch status.

When a tape volume has been successfully initialized using the INTAPE verb, the TMC data set name is updated to reflect that the volume was initialized. In addition, the birth date field in the TMC record is updated with the current date and the volume is available for use as a scratch tape. TMSTPNIT will set all eight read/write error count fields to zero.

SER=vvvvvv

Specifies the volume serial number of the first or only tape to be labeled. The value of vvvvvv can be incremented by one for each additional tape to be initialized. When processing multiple tapes, TMSTPNIT starts with the specified SER= keyword and continues with the next volume that appears in the TMC for the NUMBTAPE volume. Volumes which are not in the correct status are reported and skipped. If the volume serial number is less than 6 characters, it must be enclosed in single quotes.

OWNER='cccccccccc[cccc]'

Specifies the owner's name or similar identification. The information is specified in character format. It can be up to 10 characters in length for EBCDIC and BCD volume labels, or up to 14 characters in length for volume labels written in ASCII. If this name contains blanks or other special characters (except periods or hyphens), it must be enclosed in single quotes. Embedded quotes may be indicated by specifying two single quotes. If not specified, the VENDOR field from the TMC is used. If specified, the first 8 characters are saved in the TMC VENDOR field.

NUMBTAPE=n

The value of n can be from 1 to 999. If omitted, one tape is initialized. Otherwise initialization is attempted of each tape in the TMC, starting with the one specified by SER= and continuing for n tapes. n will include tapes that are invalid or fail.

Note: If OUTTAPE is specified, only one tape is initialized regardless of NUMBTAPE.

LABTYPE=xx

Specifies the type of LABEL= to be written to the tape. SL is IBM standard label, AL is ANSI standard label, and NL is no label (tapemark written).

DISP=

Specifies whether to UNLOAD or REWIND the tape after initialization. UNLOAD is the default.

ACCESS=c

Single character for ANSI security access. Valid values are blank or A thru Z. This is valid only if LABTYPE= has been specified as AL.

ERASE

Issues a data secure erase to destroy any residual data on the tape (may significantly increase elapsed time).
