TMSSMSUP is a utility which can be used to update the SMS Management Class field in the TMC. For Volume and DSNB records, the field name is SMSMC and is 8 characters.
TMSSMSUP can be executed initially to update the SMSMC field, or when SMS Management Class definitions change. Normally, SMS Management Class names are obtained during OPEN for OUTPUT. SMS Management Class names are used to assign tape scratch pools, enforcing SMS Management Class maximum retention, assigning expiration dates or retention criteria and for other reporting purposes.
SMS Management Classes are obtained by invoking the installed SMS ACS routines by way of the SMS subsystem. Values returned by SMS are used to update the TMC Volume and DSNB records. For more information on coding ACS routines to return Management Class assignments for tape data sets, see the Programming Guide.
CA 1 must be active or batch active to run TMSSMSUP.
