TMC Fields Used to Track Tapes in Automated Tape Libraries

CA 1 provides two fields in the Tape Management Catalog (TMC). These fields enable you to track the residency of tapes in ATLs and virtual tape systems. A third field is provided, but is only used for virtual tape solutions to record the physical volume serial number that a virtual tape is written to. Te following fields are provoided:

ROBTY (Robot type)

Identifies the manufacturer (IBM, STK and others) and if the robot is a virtual tape system. Specific bit settings are defined for the leading robotics and virtual tape vendors. The following is a partial list:

Note: For a complete list, see the Programming Guide.

ROBID (Robot identifier)

A robotic device indicator used to distinguish between multiple robots of the same type in an installation. This field is a field you assign. Typically, if an installation has three robots of the same type they are assigned the identifiers of 1,2, and 3, however the identifiers can be assigned any number up to 255.

ACTVOL (Actual volume serial number)

The container volume serial number is used to record the physical volser that one or more virtual volumes are written on. This field is not used for basic ATL support.

These fields may be updated using the TMSUPDTE utility as well as the ISPF and TIQ user interfaces. However, the fields are primarily updated by the user exits provided by CA or by the robotic system vendor. Exits are invoked when volumes are entered into or removed from the library, providing an up-to-the-minute status on volume residency.
