Activate and Deactivate TMC Volume Records

When a TMC is created for the first time using TMSFORMT or TMSBLDVR, it is often created with an additional range or ranges of Volume records in anticipation of future library growth. The ranges are usually placed in inactive (DELETE) status to prevent the records from appearing on various CA 1 reports. The status also prevents nonresident tapes with the same VOLSER from appearing to be under CA 1 control.

Use the TMSDELET batch utility to do the following:

For TMSDELET to deactivate a record, the record must be in scratch status. Suppose, for example, that a tape was destroyed and is not replaced immediately. By executing TMSDELET, you can place the TMC Volume record in inactive status. You indicate to CA 1 that an entry exists in the TMC for this volume serial number but there is no tape volume in the tape library.

CA 1 online facilities have special functions that can ADD (activate) or DELETE (deactivate) TMC Volume records. If you are planning to activate or deactivate a range of volumes, use TMSDELET. The online function can only operate on a single volume record at a time.

Volume records can be activated automatically when you initialize the tape volume with the TMSTPNIT program. Once the status of a TMC Volume record has been changed from inactive to active, the tape volume is immediately available as a scratch tape.
