Following each verb the &RETCODE and &ZFDBK system variables are set to indicate the success or otherwise of the &APPC request.
In addition, for each conversation, a set of system variables is maintained that provides information concerning the conversation status:

Product set information from an error log GDS
Conversation identifier
The conversation identifier for the transaction that started the NCL process
Local link name
Session mode name
Network qualified local luname
Network qualified remote luname
Current receive map name
Received protocol indicators
Current send map name
Conversation state
Conversation sync_level
Conversation type
What_received indicator
What_received short indicator
Request_to_send indicator
Transaction identifier
