Performance Improvement Using Containment Resources

Typically, you create one definition for each resource you want to automate or monitor. However, if a group of resources on a system are not required to be monitored individually (for example, JES lines), you can use a single containment resource definition to manage these resources. By defining the operations methods of the group in a containment resource definition instead of in individual resource definitions, your site reduces the CPU usage by the region during startup and shutdown. You can implement containment resource definitions for the following resource classes: DASD, INIT, LINE, PRT, and TAPE.

A containment resource definition can use a containment filter to group resources on the local system and uses the $RM02CRP NCL procedure to perform the operations functions such as starting, stopping, and setting the actual state of the individual resources. You do not need a containment filter if you want to group all resources belonging to a class.
