VARY device serialization provides complete protection against cross-system tape data corruption or device status problems due to online processing occurring against devices that are externally allocated or are in the process of becoming externally allocated. The granular nature of the serialization allows for the alignment of VARY device processing, tape allocation, and SWAP serialization to minimize any performance impact of the serialization. However, anytime serialization is added to a process, tradeoffs are necessary to realize the benefits provided by the serialization. The operational characteristics associated with the CA MIA enhanced VARY device serialization are discussed in the following sections.
