3.0 System Requirements

This release can be run in a TCP/IP v4 or TCP/IP v6 environment.

3.1 Before You Install

Before you install the product, review the System Requirements, Client and Server Requirements, and Installation Steps in the Getting Started guide. To verify that you are installing the latest available build connect to CA Support Online.

CA MICS Prerequisites

BAS7767 is a prerequisite for CA MICS Q&R Workstation 12.9.00.

CAICCI-PC Configuration Requirements

This version of Q&R Workstation requires CAICCI-PC r14.0.1 (32 bit).

CA MICS Q&R Workstation Upgrade Requirements

The CA MICS Resource Management Q&R Workstation r12.9 installation process can upgrade Q&R Workstation releases 12.7 or 12.8 to release 12.9.

3.2 After You Install

Installation Verification

After you install Q&R r12.9, perform the following installation verification procedures:

  1. Verify that your Windows User ID and Domain Name are defined in the Q&R Distributed Server Security database.
  2. Verify that the Q&R Distributed Server system name is defined in the sharedprefix.MICS.PARMS(MQRPARMS) file.
  3. Run a Build/Refresh Meta Database from the Q&R Distributed Server Admin application.
  4. Run an existing query or build and run a new query.
  5. View the output through Output Retrieval and Charting.
  6. When upgrading from Q&R 12.7, review the Upgrade Considerations for RMWSLoad and RMWSPare in the Upgrade Considerations section of this document and perform recommended actions.
  7. Run RMWSLoad to publish distributed content.

4.0 General Considerations

Installing Q&R Workstation 12.9 provides the following benefits:

4.1 Q&R Query Improvements

Q&R Query has been enhanced in the following areas:

4.2 Q&R System Info Improvements

Q&R System Info Utility has the following improvements.

4.3 Q&R Distributed Server Changes

The Q&R Distributed Server has been updated in support of changes to Q&R Query and Q&R Distributed Server Administration.

4.4 Q&R Distributed Server Administration Improvements

Q&R Distributed Server Administration has been enhanced with new features and support for the changes to the underlying utilities.

4.5 MICS Query Library

The CA MICS Query Library has been updated to include several new reports. This library includes over 50 Q&R Workstation sample queries that process and report on data from the DB2, CICS, IDMS, IMS, MQS, RMF, SMF, TAPE, VCA, VM, and WEB components.

The sample queries are designed to provide "out-of-the-box" value for CA MICS customers. The queries generate useful graphics that show resource usage, workload activity, processor configuration, and other metrics that are important to modern data centers.

The following queries are new in CA MICS 12.9.

The following queries have been updated in CA MICS 12.9.

Note: For any of these queries, obtain the updated query from the Q&R Query Library and replace your older query with the updated version.

For on-demand use, open the report from the CA MICS Query Library, update it for your environment and replace the version that you run locally through Q&R Query.

To replace a production report:

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the report from the CA MICS Query Library.
  2. Update it for your environment.
  3. To move it to the mainframe, use the Move Query To Production feature.
  4. On the mainframe, replace the existing MICF Inquiry in the associated User Reporting or Production Reporting Job Stream.

Note: For more information, see the Query Library Guide and the Q&R Administration Guide.

6.0 Database Conversions

This release contains changes to tables in the MQRUtility.accdb and MQROptions.accdb. The tables are updated automatically during the installation process.

After the conversion, the message MQR8011I: *** MQRDBCVTr129 processing complete. Program Closing. is displayed in the status bar.

7.0 Installation Considerations

Note: See the Installing Q&R Workstation chapter of the Getting Started guide for documentation of the installation processes where:

The upgrade process documentation provides for an orderly phased migration of a production environment and optional testing of Q&R Workstation components during the process.

During the installation of Q&R, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 is installed to support application upgrades. If a previous installation is not detected, the Framework installation occurs automatically before the Q&R installation begins.

If you are prompted, install CAICCI-PC (Server Only or Full Install) which is required for Q&R Distributed Server components. CAICCI-PC can be configured during the Q&R Install or after the install completes. Instructions to install and configure CAICCI-PC are included in the Q&R Workstation Getting Started guide.

Installation Considerations for Q&R r12.9 in a Windows 7 or Windows 8 Environment

If you schedule a batch execution of the Q&R Distributed Server Administration utilities:

Select the Run with Highest Privileges option in the security options section of the task’s properties. This selection verifies that the utilities will run with the privileges necessary to complete successfully.

Q&R Query (.QRQ) Considerations

Q&R queries that were created with Q&R r12.6 and above can be run with Q&R Release 12.9.

Q&R Security Considerations

8.0 Upgrade Considerations

This section describes upgrade considerations specific to this release.

Only use CA MICS Resource Management Q&R Workstation r12.9 to upgrade Q&R Workstation versions 12.7 or higher.

Upgrade Considerations for the Publish Output to Q&R Web Reporting (RMWSLoad) Utility

Q&R Web Reporting 12.9 supplies code to replace the existing java script, html, and cascading style sheets that were used in Q&R 12.7. When customizing your Q&R Web Reporting environment, analyze how this new code affects your reports and adjustment accordingly before publishing web content using Q&R 12.9.

Note: The (RMWSLoad) utility builds different indexes in a new format. The new index files (jindex.txt and jkeys.txt) are smaller and load faster than those files used in 12.7 (outputindex.txt and bcf.txt). RMWSLoad automatically converts the existing files to the new format in any report directory it publishes to. This operation could make the first RMWSLoad run in Q&R 12.9 slightly longer, but subsequent RMWSLoad runs are slightly faster than they were in Q&R 12.7.

Information about RMWSLoad upgrade behaviors after Q&R 12.9 is installed:

Upgrade Considerations for the Remove Output Utility (RMWSPare)

Upgrade Considerations for Moving Queries to Production

In Q&R 12.8 moving a query to production was done by opening a query, selecting the Run option, selecting a Save Q&R Query to PDS template, and selecting Ok. The location where the query is saved is determined by the value of the PRDPDS parameter in sharedprefix.MICS.PARMS(MQRUTAB). With Q&R 12.9 this functionality is obsolete and has been replaced by a new Move Query to Production feature. Move Query to Production is now a separate function with its own toolbar icon. The location of the mainframe data set used to store queries is now predefined in sharedprefix.MICS.MQR.PUTPDS. The member name is the query name followed by an optional suffix. Clicking the OK button submits the QRPUTPDS template, but this template now invokes new MQRPUTQY program that handles the save. To complete the operation successfully, the Q&R user who performs the Move Query to Production function, must have WRITE access to sharedprefix.MICS.MQR.PUTPDS for the complexes where he saves the queries.
