2.1 Product Usage Options

The VM Data Transfer Program assists in moving data from your
VM system to your MVS system.

Data movement can be performed using NJE or similar spool
networking facilities, or by tape. These options are
selectable by parameter settings.

VM Monitor and Account data is ordinarily presented to a
virtual machine as a spool file. VM Monitor data is in a
unique format that cannot be processed through a NJE network.
The VM Data Transfer Program puts this data into a format
which is acceptable to a NJE network. The VM Data Transfer
Program reads both VM Monitor and Account data from the VM
spool. Provisions are also made for reading both of these
types of data from tape and disk files.

To reduce the load on your network and the CA MICS VM and CMS
Analyzer, a special feature permits the exclusion of VM
Account or Monitor records which your installation does not
need to process. This is especially helpful for VM Monitor
event data, which comprises up to 75 percent of all VM
Monitor data collected.

Additionally, a data compression algorithm further reduces
the volume of data sent through your network.

The structure of the VM Data Transfer Program allows
experienced users to interface with other products or use
mechanisms other than NJE and tape for transporting data.

These features allow the VM Data Transfer Program to be used
effectively for transmitting your VM data to the MVS system
which runs CA MICS.
