1.0 Welcome

Welcome to CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0.00.

This readme contains information about viewing and printing the User Guide and the Release Notes, software requirements for CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0 and considerations for preparing your CA IDMS Mainframe systems. It also contains instructions on how to contact technical support.

2.0 Software Requirements

The software requirements depend on the client's licensed products as follows:

2.1 Customers with Licenses for CA IDMS SQL and Server

CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0 operates with any supported maintenance level of CA IDMS r16 or later versions.

CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0 runs on PC platforms with Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2003 or Server 2008 and CA IDMS Server r16 or later versions.

2.2 Customers without Licenses for CA IDMS SQL or Server

CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0 operates with mainframe operating systems. CCI supports the mainframe operating systems and with CA IDMS r16 with SP2 or higher or with any supported maintenance level of CA IDMS r17 and Version 18.0. CA IDMS r16 with minimally SP2 is also referred to as CA IDMS r16.2.

CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0 runs on PC platforms with Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2003 or Server 2008. As part of the installation of CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0, the free client component of CA IDMS Server r17 must be installed or reinstalled.

Important: Customers without a license for CA IDMS Server must install or reinstall the free client component of CA IDMS Server that comes with the CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0 install image. An older version of the free client component of CA IDMS Server does not work with CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0.

3.0 Installation Requirements

The PC and Mainframe installation processes are described in the CA IDMS Installation and Maintenance Guide for z/OS.

4.1 HTML Bookshelf

This release contains the CA IDMS Visual DBA Version 18.0 HTML Bookshelf, an HTML online help system that provides access to all deliverables in the product documentation set, regardless of the file format. The HTML Bookshelf features include:

Notes:

4.2 Release Numbers on Documentation

The release number on the title page of a document might not correspond to the current product release number. However, all documentation delivered with the product, regardless of release number on the title page, does support your use of the current product release. The release number changes only when a significant portion of a document changes to support a new or updated product release. If no substantive changes are made to a document, the release number does not change. For example, a document for r2.4 can still be valid for r2.4 SP3 or even r3.1. Documentation bookshelves always reflect the current product release number.

Occasionally, we must update documentation outside of a new or updated release. To indicate a minor change to the documentation that does not invalidate it for any releases that it supports, we update the edition number on the cover page. First editions do not have an edition number.

5.1 Problem Reporting

When you encounter a problem with CA IDMS Visual DBA, in most cases, the Error History dialog indicates the cause of the problem. Before opening an issue, check the Error History dialog and include any relevant entries in the problem report.

You can access the Error History dialog by:

The last method, Ctrl-E, has the option of displaying while a dialog is open.

The Error History is only available during a CA IDMS Visual DBA session and contains only the last 20 errors of the current session.

There is also an error log file which accumulates errors for all CA IDMS Visual DBA sessions. The default name of the error log file is CAIDVDBA.ERR, and the default location is the current folder.

You can set the location and base name through the OK Actions preferences window, which is accessed by selecting Preferences from the File menu, followed by OK Actions from the Preferences window. These settings are saved in the Windows Registry.

In some cases, it might be useful to include parts of the syntax files in the problem report. The syntax files contain all compiler syntax that has been generated, regardless of any errors. Syntax files are only created if syntax logging is turned on through the OK Action dialog under Preferences. See the online help for more details on the syntax log files.
