1.0 Welcome

Welcome to the CA IDMS Server r17 Readme.

This file contains information about operating system support, system requirements, and installation considerations for CA IDMS Server r17. It also contains information on how to contact technical support.

2.0 Operating System Requirements

CA IDMS Server r17 supports ODBC on Windows, and supports JDBC on all platforms supporting Java 1.6 or later, including Windows, z/OS, Linux, and variants of UNIX. The ODBC driver implements the ODBC 3.5 specification. The JDBC driver implements the JDBC 4.0 specification.

3.0 System Requirements

System requirements vary by platform and options installed. CPU speed and memory requirements are dictated by the applications that use CA IDMS Server and by the Java Virtual Machine.

Disk requirements are approximately:

4.0 Installation Considerations

The ODBC driver and native client interface are now installed in the product directory instead of the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory. CA IDMS is the registered name for the IDMS Server r17 ODBC Driver and appears as such in the ODBC Administrator application. Any prior version of IDMS Server appears as CA-IDMS in the ODBC Administrator.

These changes allow CA IDMS Server r17 to be installed on a Windows system without requiring the uninstallation of any previous release. Since ODBC data source definitions in the Windows registry reference the driver DLL, existing data sources continue to use the earlier release. CA IDMS Server r17 provides a migration utility to convert or copy existing data source definitions to work with the new ODBC driver. For more information, see the chapter "Installing the Client on Windows" in the User Guide.

Applications that use the DRIVER keyword with the ODBC SQLConnect function must be changed to specify the new driver name to use the CA IDMS Server r17 ODBC driver. For more information, see the chapter "ODBC Programmer’s Reference" in the User Guide.

Applications that use the type 2 JDBC driver must specify the path to the CA IDMS native libraries on Windows and z/OS. For more information, see the chapter "JDBC Programmer’s Reference" in the User Guide.

4.1 IDMSDB--64-Bit ODBC Installations

If you plan to access ODBC via OLEDB, you may need to install the 64 bit MSDASQL provider and explicitly designate it in your ASP pages. This is necessary because no default provider is designated on 64-bit Windows platforms. The following error occurs when no provider has been specified in your connection string:

Error Number: 800A0EA9

Error Message: Provider is not specified and there is no designated default provider.

Source: ADODB.Connection

In addition to installing the 64-bit MSDASQL OLEDB provider for ODBC, the following provider designation should be added to your connection string:

"Provider=MSDASQL; DSN=My-IDMS-DSN"

Refer to Microsoft KB Article 971987 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971987) for complete details on this problem and resolution.

5.0 Mainframe Prerequisites

To use the Returned Result Sets and Column Table Name in Descriptors features requires CA IDMS r17 with the following PTFs:

To use the Primary and Foreign Key Metadata feature, you must apply an APAR. The APARs for the supported releases of CA IDMS are:

The External Identity Auditing feature has differing requirements depending on the driver being used:

APARs QI90938 and QI90933 contain the documentation updates to the CA IDMS Reports Guide and CA IDMS Journal Analyzer User Guide, respectively. The CA IDMS r16 APARs for both features are targeted for delivery with CA IDMS r16 SP6 and later.

6.0 Known Issue

The following is a known issue with CA IDMS Server r17.

6.1 PDF index entries

When using the index to locate an item in a PDF file, the referenced item might not appear on the indexed page. Index entries are tied to the section title, not to the actual text in the section. If a section continues beyond one page, the indexed item might be on the following pages, depending on the length of the section. If you use the index to locate an item and you do not see it on the referenced page, look to the next few pages. Alternately, use the PDF search utility to locate an item.
