Submodels

Instead of opening an entire model, you can create a submodel in the database to focus on a specific business unit or process. When you save a CA ERwin Data Modeler data model that contains subject areas to the mart, each subject area automatically becomes a submodel. You can work with a submodel independently of the main model. When you save the submodel, the main model is automatically updated with your changes. When you lock a submodel, the parent model is also locked.

For each model, you can create an unlimited number of submodels. For example, you can create a separate submodel for each business unit or process and select only the entities that you want for each submodel. You can then open each submodel independently of the parent model, thereby decreasing the amount of time your computer needs to load model objects, save data, and merge model changes. For security reasons, you might also want to create submodels that can only be accessed by certain users.

When using submodels, note the following:

• When you open a model that contains submodels, you must use the standard CA ERwin DM Subject Area Editor to create, update, and delete CA ERwin Data Modeler subject areas.
• Open models and locked models that contain submodels do not appear in the Submodel Manager.
• When you open a submodel, the CA ERwin DM Subject Area Editor is disabled so you cannot create a new submodel within an existing one.
• In order to use the Submodel Manager on a r7.x or later model being upgraded to r8, you must first open the r7.x or later model in r8.
