Add a Validation Rule

Add validation rules to enforce the business rules of your organization. The rules that you create can establish a value, a list of values, or a range of acceptable values to store in a table, column, entity, or attribute.

To add a validation rule

1. Click Validation Rules on the Model menu.

   The Validation Rules dialog opens.

2. Click New.

   The New Validation Rule dialog opens.

3. Do one of the following and click OK:
   • Enter a logical name for the validation rule in the Logical field if you are working in a logical model.
   • Enter a physical name for the validation rule in the Physical field if you are working in a physical model. If you derive a physical model from a logical model, the physical validation rule name is, by default, the same name as the logical validation rule name.
   • Enter a logical name for the validation rule, click the Physical field to display the name you entered for the logical name, and, optionally, enter a different physical name for the validation rule if you are working in a logical/physical model.

   The New Validation Rule dialog closes and you are returned to the Validation Rules dialog.

4. Specify additional properties as needed using the following options and click OK:
   • General tab

     Lets you specify the following options:

     • Enter an expression in the correct syntax for the selected server to create a server-side validation expression using the User-Defined button.
     • Specify minimum and maximum values using the Min/Max button.
     • Create a set of valid values using the Valid Value List button.
   • <Database> tab

     Select or clear the Apply to Server check box to indicate whether the new rule is to apply to a server and enter the server expression in the <Database> box. For Access or Progress target servers only, optionally enter a text message in the Access Validation Text box or Progress Error Msg box to create a text message, which appears if a user attempts to enter an invalid value in the associated column.

   • Comment tab

     Adds a comment to the validation rule.

   • UDP tab

     Adds a user-defined property to the validation rule.

   The validation rule is added with the properties you defined and the Validation Rules dialog closes.
