How an SSL Encryption Connection Is Established

In an SSL transaction, the following happens:

1. The client sends a handshake to the server.
2. The server sends its certificate to the client.

   The certificate includes the following information:

   • The DN of the DSA
   • The server's public key
   • The DN of the Certification Authority that issued the certificate
   • The time for which the certificate is valid
3. If the certificate is valid and the client trusts the Certification Authority, the client has now verified the server's identity, and the connection is made.
