1.0 Welcome

Welcome to the CA Datacom Server. This readme contains known issues and other information. For a complete list of the details about how the features and enhancements for this release might affect you, see the Release Notes.

2.0 Operating System Support

The following operating systems are supported:

CA Datacom Server is supported on 32-bit and 64-bit platforms on Windows.

3.0 System Requirements

If you intend to use CCI, the CAICCI PC component must be installed and functional before you install and configure the CA Datacom Server workstation component. You can download the required ccipcsv6.exe from the CA Datacom and CA Ideal Solutions and Patches Index on the CA Datacom homepage at http://support.ca.com.

CAICCI PC component is not required if TCP/IP is the communication protocol between the client and CA Datacom Server on the mainframe.

Verify that you have the 64-bit CAICCI PC component installed when you install the 64-bit CA Datacom Server on PC.

Note: See the CAICCI documentation for more information on installing and configuring CAICCI on a workstation.

The ODBC Driver Manager must be installed before installing CA Datacom Server Version 14.0. It does not need to be installed on client workstations that only use JAVA with a JDBC interface. It is not necessary to re-install the ODBC Driver Manager when upgrading from CA Datacom Server r11.

CA Datacom Server Version 14.0 conforms to the ODBC 3.5 specification and can be used with more recent releases of the Driver Manager.

With the release of ODBC 3.5, Microsoft has embedded the ODBC Driver Manager into the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), along with ActiveX Data Objects, the OLE DB Provider for ODBC, and updated ODBC drivers for Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, and Oracle. Since the ODBC Driver Manager components can no longer be redistributed separately, they are not installed as part of the CA Datacom Server Version 14.0 installation.

The latest release of MDAC can be freely downloaded directly from the Microsoft web site: http://www.microsoft.com.

Workstation users who intend to use ODBC must configure at least one ODBC data source to access the Server mainframe component. You can use the default, Datacom, ODBC data source if you wish. If using CCI, the CA Datacom Server ODBC Driver must know the CAICCI system and application IDs of a mainframe server. Whether the workstation user fills in the CAICCI IDs and other data source options when configuring a data source depends on how the user's ODBC-enabled applications handle ODBC connections.

A Java 1.6 compliant Java Virtual Machine (JVM) must be installed to use the CA Datacom Server JDBC driver with JDBC applications. A JVM is not needed to use ODBC.

Supported Java Virtual Machines include the Oracle Java Run Time Environment (JRE) for Java 1.6.

The latest releases of the Oracle JRE can be freely downloaded directly from the web site: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html

4.0 Installation Considerations

For Windows:

For Non-Windows and Non-USS applications:

5.0 General Considerations

The CA Datacom Server sample programs can be downloaded from the CA Datacom home page at http://support.ca.com. Under the Recommended Reading section, click the Use and Disclosure of Sample Programs link. After you accept the agreement, you are directed to the Sample Programs area. Look for CA Datacom Server.

The Java docs subdirectory of the Windows installation directory contains documentation of the public classes for this release in HTML format. These pages were prepared using the javadoc utility and include specific information on the CA Datacom implementation of the JDBC API. This includes a description of the format of the JDBC URL used by the JDBC driver.

6.0 Known Issues

Microsoft Data Access Objects (DAO) do not allow the updating of tables through a view. DAO considers a table to be read only if there are no unique keys on the table (defined using an index). Since a view does not have an index, DAO considers it read only. Use base tables or table procedures (both can have unique keys defined on them) when updating data with DAO.
