RAID Compatibility

RAID media generated by different RAID configurations are fully compatible. That is, you can add additional drives to an existing RAID without losing the data that has already been backed up by the RAID.

For example, suppose you create a three-drive RAID device and back up data to this RAID. You can add an additional drive to the RAID. Backups made after the new drive has been added will take advantage of the additional drive. For a new tape set of four tapes, the data is now distributed across four drives. However, you can still restore data previously backed up with the three-drive RAID by inserting the set of three tapes into any three of the four RAID drives. You can also still use the set of three tapes for backups in the four-drive RAID.

Note: RAID Level 1 tapes can be read in a non-RAID tape drive but not written to. RAID Level 1 tapes cannot be used in a RAID Level 0 or RAID Level 5. RAID Level 0 and RAID Level 5 tapes are compatible.
