How CA ARCserve Backup Achieves VSS Support
CA ARCserve Backup provides VSS backup and restore support through the following solutions:
- CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Open Files--Works with VSS-aware applications to provide point-in-time backup and restore of files and data sets on Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows 7 operating systems. As changes are made to the original information, intermediate shadow copies are created to back up only those changes. The Agent for Open Files (the agent) creates software-based shadow copies as well as hardware-based shadow copies on devices that support this functionality; however, these hardware-based shadow copies are not transportable.
The CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Open Files lets you perform open file backups and VSS-based backups.
Note: You must install the CA ARCserve Backup Client Agent for Windows on the system where you will perform VSS-based backups.
- CA ARCserve Backup Enterprise Option for VSS Hardware Snap-Shot--Works with the agent and VSS interfaces supplied by specific vendors of disk array equipment to create transportable hardware-based shadow copies. Transportable shadow copies allow greater flexibility for the backup and restore of your critical applications and files by enabling the shadow copy to be imported onto other backup servers within the same system. You can then use the transported shadow copy volumes for additional tape backups, or for other uses such as data mining and software development testing. The Enterprise Option for VSS Hardware Snap-Shot (the option) is available with the CA ARCserve Backup for Windows Enterprise Module and supports Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft SQL 2005, and Microsoft SQL 2008.
When used in a remote backup and restore configuration, both of these solutions use the CA ARCserve Backup Client Agent for Windows to provide communication between workstations and the CA ARCserve Backup server.
