Restore Transportable VSS Backups Using MSDE Writers

To restore a transportable VSS backup of the MSDE Writer

1. On the Source tab of the Restore Manager, choose the restoration type:
   • Restore by Tree: Microsoft SQL backups are visible in the tree at the same level as volume and system state backups. Click the icon next to the appropriate database to select it. One database, the last database in the multistreaming backup job appears in the tree.

     To see other databases, click Version History. From the Version History window, select the version that represents the stream of the database you want to restore and click Select. The Restore Manager displays the new database.

   • Restore by Session: Microsoft SQL backups are listed as separate sessions. Click the icon next to the session's name to restore all of the Components included in the session. To restore an individual Component, expand the session and select the Component's name.

   Note: Not all Components can be restored individually. The Writer decides whether a Component can be restored individually. When an SQL Server instance is stopped, restoring only one individual custom database is not supported, even though the restore job is successful.

2. On the Destination tab of the Restore Manager, choose the destination to which to restore. Choose one of the following:
   • Restore files to their original location
   • Restore to user-shared directories and drives (alternate location)

   By default, files are restored to their original location. If you choose to restore files to an alternate location, a list of computers, directories, and files appears, from which you can select a specific destination. For more information about restore locations, see Restore Locations.

3. From the Schedule tab of the Restore Manager, choose the appropriate options to schedule your job.
4. Click Submit on the Restore Manager to begin the restore operation. A Security dialog opens.

   Important! Ensure that all databases are off line or detached before the restore job starts.

5. In the Security dialog, enter the authentication information for the production server and click OK. The Submit Job dialog appears.
6. In the Submit Job dialog, select Run Now or select Run On and specify a specific date and time. Click OK. The restore job is added to the job queue. Use the Job Status Manager to monitor the progress of the restore job.
